Planting Cassava


Planting Cassava  - Gardening at home

1) Cassava plants tends to branch irregularly and bears its large (20 cm long) lobed leaves near the tips of long branches ,the leaves are short-lived (1-3 months) and are readily lost during drought or after insect attack. Cassava is very hardy and tolerant of a wide range of soils. For planting, first cut the branches or the stem of a well matured cassava plant. (A cassava plant which gave the best harvest )

2) For planting you can take 20 - 25 cm pieces from branches / stem.

3)  Spacing 

Spacing can be varied with the variety.

If the cassava plant give rise to many branches you can space 100 cm x 100 cm.

If the cassava plant give rise to less branches you can space

90Cm x 90Cm

4) Planting

On set of rain in the most suitable time period to planting. A coconut husk layer can be used to retain moisture in dry areas. In the mixed cropping drying out will be reduced due to perennial main crops. It reduces the drying out of soil. 

Cassava can be grown in any soil. (Cassava plants prefer rich loam soils)

Cassava can also be grown in sandy soils.

Prepare a hole for the cassava plant by mixing in rich compost. The ideal location will be sunny with moist, well-draining soil.

After preparing the holes in the soil, 

Bury the stem in the soil, make sure that one leaf node is above the surface. The leaf node is the section where a leaf was removed.

This variety can give a harvest of 1 - 2 kg of tubers per plant within a short period of time.
